Right after I watched it, I saw him play in Jazz Confusion with Pee Wee Ellis at Iridium. They oddly ran the trailer for the doc on screens before he came out, and he was selling copies of it, so the crowd got into his legend and some consciously tried to anger him. It worked, and it's much less fun to see him get riled up in person than on film. Walked off at one point, citing pain and rage, and kept telling everyone their job was to shut up and listen, because he was sick of having to play for them as a dying old man.

He can still play, though, even if in short bursts and without joy. He genuinely seemed to be in a lot of pain throughout, and had breathing issues. And it must really suck that people still ask for Cream tunes (who yells for Sunshine of Your Love at a jazz show?). Great drum duels with his conga player, throughout.

Yeah, I saw him a few months back as well...much better (his health) the night I saw him, but your description is largely on target. Poor old guy....yes, though, he can still play.
